Hotel overview

Harveys Lake Tahoe Hotel and Casino is situated right on beautiful Lake Tahoe. Blocking the view from some of the rooms at its lakeside "cousin" Harrah's across the street, Harveys offers additional restaurants and facilities that nicely complement any stay in Lake Tahoe, no matter which property you choose. (You can walk between the two properties by way of an underground passageway, or simply walk across the street.)

There is a special Diamond check-in (opposite the front desk and down the hallway on the left) that has a small bar offering bottled water, but it's open only on weekends and for special events. Self-parking in an adjacent garage is complimentary for Seven Stars cardholders (see below), but it's a bit of a walk if you have lots of luggage. Take advantage of the complimentary valet parking instead.

Hotel guestrooms

Request a lakeside view in the newer tower at Harveys. While rooms in both the original tower and the newer tower have been renovated, rooms in the newer tower are larger and offer better views of Lake Tahoe and/or the surrounding Sierras. Rooms do not have coffeemakers, but you can request one at no charge.

Inside Information

NOTE: All shows, events and deadlines are subject to postponement or cancellation due to temporary casino closings and/or safety and health measures implemented by the state.

■ If you are trying to qualify for bonus tier credits, and you are playing both at Harveys and Harrah's, you will have to keep track of credits earned at each. The total daily points shown at each casino are solely those you earned at that casino.

■ If you're a golfer, it's worth asking a host about discounts at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

There is nothing particularly distinctive about Harveys, and its small two-level casino features all the usual slots and table games, as well as a Poker Room. The Poker Room is open Thursday to Sunday, with the first freshly sanitized table starting at 3 p.m. Complimentary drink service in the casino is relatively frequent; and dealers, slot attendants and servers all are extremely friendly and helpful.

Except for the small Cabaret Theater – home to The Improv at Harveys – there is no showroom, but Harveys has the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena that in the summer that attracts a somewhat more stellar roster of performers than Harrah's (Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, Phish and the Dave Matthews Band, to name a few).Harveys signature fine dining restaurant is the Sage Room. An elegant steakhouse popular with locals and guests alike, the Sage Room has been a landmark since its opening in 1947. The restaurant has relocated from the first to the 19th floor, replacing 19 Kitchen + Bar. The Sage Room’s décor includes original Native American lamps that were gifted to Harveys from the Washoe Tribe. The restaurant has a classic steakhouse menu featuring unique appetizers and salads prepared tableside, along with Black Angus steaks, poultry, veal, lamb, beef Wellington and seafood. Dessert specialties include bananas Foster and cherries jubilee, both prepared tableside.

The other popular dining spot is Hell’s Kitchen. The restaurant takes its name from Gordon Ramsay’s hit reality television show of the same name, and is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays. Hell’s Kitchen occupies the space formerly used by the Sage Room (see above). Hell’s Kitchen features a bit of the old with all of the new. Sage Room’s wooden beams – hewn from trees cleared when the original Harveys was built in the 1940s – have been left intact. The menu, however, offers many dishes featured on the TV show, including signature items like pan-seared scallops, lobster risotto, crisp skin salmon, beef Wellington and sticky toffee pudding.

The 2020 Summer Concert Series at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Acts set to perform this year included Phish, Kenny Chesney, Kid Rock and Bob Dylan. “This is the first time in its 18-year history. . .that the Summer Concert Series will take a hiatus,” said Brad Belhouse, Caesars Entertainment Corp. regional president, Northern Nevada and Laughlin. “Following guidance from public health officials, we have decided to postpone the series normally scheduled through the summer season.” Two of the acts already have been rescheduled for 2021 – Phish (Tuesday and Wednesday, July 20 and 21) and Dierks Bentley (Sunday, Aug. 22) – while Slightly Stoopid, Kenny Chesney (two shows), Old Dominion and Rascal Flatts are currently listed as postponed, with no new dates yet announced.

Looks like somebody forgot to update the website, above, for Joe's Sports Bar & Grille. Joe's replaced Straw Hat Pizza. And, to further confuse things, below, this is what comes up when you Google Joe's Sports Bar & Grille.

Other food and beverage options range from Starbucks and Carvel Ice Cream to Cinnabon. and TaCo. Cantina & Restaurant, located on Harveys lower level next to the arcade. (Carvel Ice Cream and Cinnabon do not accept Reward Credits.) Additional options are the former Straw Hat Pizza and Joe's Sports Bar & Grille. Joe's accepts Reward Credits 1:1.

Seven Stars Lounge

There is no Seven Stars Lounge, but the Laurel Lounge (formerly Diamond Lounge) -- hours change seasonally – offers priority entrance to Seven Stars cardholders. To reach the lounge, look for the employee-operated elevator in the high limit slots area. (Alternatively, some days entrance is from the top floor of the Mountain Tower.) Sit at the relatively large bar, enjoy the view from seats along the windows, or relax in the lounge's comfy overstuffed leather chairs. Food service is extremely limited (salads, sandwich fixings, soups, potato chips, pretzels, etc.) and comes out in late afternoon between 4 and 6 p.m. Once it's gone, it's gone, though you generally can find assorted dry snacks and cookies after the "main" food is gone. Drinks may be taken out of the club into the casino.

Caesars Rewards Center

The Caesars Rewards Center shares space with the Main Cage and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Should you choose this for your Annual Retreat?

Lake Tahoe is an absolutely gorgeous place to be during any time of the year. But, remember that weather may make it difficult to get there during the winter, so plan accordingly. You will probably fly into Reno and take a limo or rent a car to get to Tahoe. Depending on what time your flight arrives, and your originating location, you may want to consider spending the night at Harrah's Reno before making the trek to Tahoe. With Harrah's (and its selection of restaurants and Reflections Spa) across the street, skiing in the winter/boating and swimming in the summer, Harveys should be a popular destination for Seven Stars retreats. It would be easy to spend four nights (and $500) here – especially since you can "cross charge" to your room any meals, spa treatments, etc., even if they take place at Harrah's.

When you check-in, be sure to verify that your $500 comp account has been set-up. Alcohol charged to the room counts toward your $500 in expenses, but not gratuities for meals and spa treatments. Any taxes on food, liquor and spa services are waived, and are not counted toward your $500 in allowable expenses. Best advice is to keep all your receipts until you settle your final bill.
