Fourteen tribal members, including two sitting Tribal Council members and a former principal chief, have introduced a resolution to reverse a Dec. 17 vote to purchase the gaming operations at Caesars Southern Indiana Hotel and Casino for $250 million. The proposed resolution claims the decision and the meeting at which it was made – on multiple fronts – violated the tribe’s Charter and Governing Document.
BACKGROUND
In a narrow vote, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Tribal Council has elected to pursue a $280 million deal to purchase the gaming operation at Caesars Southern Indiana Hotel and Casino. The Council also voted to set up a new limited liability company to oversee the venture. Closing is expected toward the end of June. The venture is anticipated to bring in $40 million annually in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. Indiana casinos with between $150 and $600 million in gross revenue must pay 35 percent in taxes.
