The Mississippi Gaming Commission released the following statement on Facebook: "Based on guidance from the State Health Officer and in order to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, all persons in indoor public areas of a casino property shall be required to wear a mask covering the face and nose. Persons may remove masks temporarily while eating or drinking or when asked by casino staff for identification. Guests not adhering to these requirements will be advised of the requirements and warned that if they continue to disregard they will be asked to leave the property."

Overview
Horseshoe Tunica Hotel & Casino is located between the former Tunica Roadhouse and MGM Resorts International's Gold Strike.

The nearest major airport is Memphis, about a 45-minute drive.  Only charters fly into Tunica Municipal Airport.

Casino overview
Horseshoe has 70 table games, approximately 1,700 slot machines and a poker room.
The casino is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day.  Only the sportsbook, and the poker room are non-smoking.

https://sites.google.com/site/sevenstarsinsider/horseshoe-tunica/The%20Book.jpg
The sports book – The Book – is located next to the poker room and boasts 12 large-screen TVs.  Three more screens display the various odds and bets available to bettors.  Chris McConnell, The Book’s manager, said that while the property focuses on regional sports and wagering on those events and offer an entire screen of regional proposition bets to take advantage of the casino’s location in the Southeastern Conference, the property also will coordinate its odds with other Caesars properties nationwide.  Caesars Rewards cardholders earn one Reward Credit and one tier credit for each $10 in bets, however, there can be up to a 24-hour delay before the credits are posted.

"Easy Pay" tickets issued by the slot machines are valid only for 60 days, so be sure to cash them in before you leave town.

Also, you no longer have to use all your free slot play at one machine.   Let’s say you download $50, have a big win and decide your machine isn’t going to hit again for a while. You’re no longer stuck playing the balance of what you downloaded.   Simply remove your Caesars Rewards card from the machine, and any unused free slot play will automatically be re-deposited back into your bank.

Caesars casinos in Baltimore, Cherokee, Hammond, New Orleans and Phoenix – and others – are among those with similar systems.

Caesars Rewards Center
The Caesars Rewards Center is adjacent to the Main Cage and is open 24 hours, seven days a week.

I couldn't help but chuckle when I saw these signs.  I guess they're "All - Day Specials" if your day starts at 5 p.m. and ends early the next morning.

Dining & entertainment
Dining options include
Jack Binion's Steak,
JB’s Café, 8 oz. Burger Bar, Lucky 8 Asian Bistro, 662 Bistro and Starbucks. 662 Bistro is located in the area formerly occupied by JB’s Café. JB’s Café has moved and occupies half of what was the former Village Square Buffet. The area used by the other half of the buffet is now an employee break room.

The hotel offers Room Service, but you have to download an app and order from your phone.

Note that, while Reward Credits (comp dollars) are accepted at each of these outlets, redemption at 8 oz. is 2:1, i.e., it takes $2 in comps (200 Reward Credits) for each $1 purchase.  In others words, a $2 cup of coffee will cost $4 in comps.  (There is a small sign to indicate this at 8 oz.)

For a change of pace, guests who are paying cash or are members of MGM Resorts International's M life Rewards player loyalty card program should consider using the restaurants next door at Gold Strike. The former Atrium has been converted to BetMGM Book Bar & Grill. They have a good selection of breakfast and dinner items. During certain hours, such as 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, they have a $50 minimum order for a two-top and $75 minimum for a four-top. A burger and fries is $12.99 so you can order two and then get something to go to make up the $50 minimum. Or there's an excellent catfish plate for $25. They have a wall full of TVs highlighted by two big screens and show multiple games at once. Other smaller TVs are scattered around the restaurant. There are no bad seats. They also have a bar with approximately 12 video poker machines.  (Prices and menu items are subject to change.)

For entertainment, there's Bluesville Showcase Nightclub.

Hotel overview
The hotel has 500 rooms, 311 on floors four through 15 are advertised as "suites"; however, most are not suites in the traditional sense.  These "Tower Suites" are a bit larger than average-sized rooms.  Also referred to by the front desk staff as "premium" rooms, there is a small flat-screen television in the bathroom.  Rooms with king-size beds have two additional TVs; rooms with two queen beds have one.

All have desks, safes, coffeemakers and refrigerators; bathrooms have single sinks with a combination tub and shower.  Toiletries are Horseshoe's house brand.

Horseshoe Tunica participates in the Pet Stay program.

The desk is nice, but I had to request a lamp from housekeeping in order to see because it was so dark in the evening I couldn't get any work done..

"Deluxe" rooms on floors two and three are smaller and have dark wood furniture, and a flat screen television.

At the registration desk there is a separate Seven Stars check-in to the far left.  Look for the special carpet.

https://sites.google.com/site/sevenstarsinsider/horseshoe-tunica/VIP.JPG
While there's a sign above a room labeled "VIP Services," it's now used only for storing electric wheelchairs.  It also serves as a "business center" where you can surf the Internet and print your board passes.  Make sure you have a flashlight or your phone has a light because it's so dark in there you can't see the keyboard.

In addition to meeting rooms on the second floor, there also is an outdoor pool (seasonal) and a fitness center complimentary to all registered hotel guests.

Ivy™, a 24-hour virtual concierge service, is now available to guests at Horseshoe Tunica, as well as Caesars Palace, The Cromwell, Harrah's, The LINQ Hotel & Casino, Nobu Hotel and Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.  After checking in, guests who have provided a cell phone number for their reservation receive a welcome message from Ivy encouraging them to text her with any questions or requests.  Ivy can book dining reservations, show tickets and spa services, as well as facilitate housekeeping and maintenance requests.  Ivy also surveys guests during their stay, which allows for quick recovery of unhappy guests in real time.  Users may opt out of receiving messages from Ivy at any time.  While Ivy is an automated artificial intelligence system, a human touch is incorporated when Ivy cannot provide a confident response.  In addition to the hotel front desk agents, a specially trained universal agent team is available to provide around the clock coverage to address requests or inquiries.  Guests can continue to text with Ivy once they return home for common requests such as to obtain a copy of their folio or locate a missing item.

The Spa at Horseshoe
For spa services, book an appointment at The Spa at Horseshoe Tunica, (662) 357-4032.  I highly recommend Tony Patterson as a massage therapist, especially if you want a deep-tissue massage.

Keep in mind, though, that, in addition to any other charges, there is a 21 percent "service charge" none of which goes to your service provider, which I find odd.

If you don't require a service and just want to use the spa to relax, take a sauna, etc., the daily fee is $18; however, there is no charge for Seven Stars and Diamond cardholders.

Special Seven Stars benefits*
There is a dedicated line at check-in (which is shared with Diamond cardholders) and the buffet.

https://sites.google.com/site/sevenstarsinsider/horseshoe-tunica/Garage.jpg
There is a section of 18 spaces on the first floor of the self-parking lot reserved for Seven Stars cardholders.  However, this is on the honor system and no one monitors these.  As you enter the garage drive ahead past the ramp to the upper floors and turn right.  The spaces begin there and continue around to the right parallel to the ramp..

The spa gives a 20 percent discount on all services; 15 percent for Diamond cardholders.  Also, if you don't have a room, simply show your Seven Stars or Diamond card to the spa attendant for complimentary access to the locker room and dry sauna.

Seven Stars Lounge
There is no Seven Stars Lounge.  A Laurel Lounge (formerly Diamond Lounge) has a small eight-seat bar in one of two large rooms; the other room has a large gas fireplace.  There are several flat-screen televisions mounted on the walls, but sound either is turned to very low or not on at all.  Smoking is allowed in the club, but patrons are asked not to smoke pipes or cigars. The bar stocks a number of high-end brands from Woodford Reserve to Johnny Walker Black.  Food options generally include a cheese and crackers, assorted dry snacks, and cookies and candy. Some hot food is available on weekends.  The lounge is open Monday through Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m., Fridays from 4 p.m. to midnight, Saturdays from noon to midnight, and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (hours subject to change).  On Sundays the lounge offers a continental breakfast (fresh fruit, pastries and muffins, etc.).  Cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages are complimentary (and may be taken out to the casino from the lounge), and there is no limit to the number of visits a guest may make in one day.

Nearby Memphis offers a number of different options for touring when you’re in the mood to take a break from the casinos.

One of the most prestigious is the National Civil Rights Museum.

If historic houses, gardens and art galleries are more your thing, check out Shelby Farms Park, the Dixon Gallery & Gardens, the Magevney House, the Mallory-Neely House, the Pink Palace Family of Museums, Victorian Village, and the Woodruff-Fontaine House Museum.

There also are Sun Studio, the Gibson Guitar Factory, the Rock 'n' Soul Museum, the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, and, of course, Graceland, pictured above.

Another thing to do is go hang out on Beale Street any evening.  There's no traffic and there are typically thousands of folks hanging out, having a great time listening to live music and consuming adult beverages.

Should you choose this for your Annual Retreat?

If you have an aversion to cigarette smoke, this is not the place you want to be.
With the exception of The Book, the Poker Room and portions of the the buffet, the entire casino is smoking.  However, with two casinos/hotels owned by Caesars (pretty much everyone recommends staying at the Horseshoe), as well as the Gold Strike next door (owned by MGM), a high-end gourmet restaurant (Jack Binion's Steak), a buffet, and an Asian restaurant all at the Horseshoe, Tunica is certainly a destination to consider.

One problem is that, if you stay over a weekend, your options for breakfast and lunch are limited.  Monday through Friday JB's Cafe is open for breakfast from 6 to 11 a.m, but on Saturday and Sunday your only choices for breakfast and lunch are Room Service and the buffet.  The Village Square Buffet serves brunch for $16.99 per person between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.  Both Starbucks and 8 oz. Burger Bar serve breakfast, but you can't sign those charges to your room
a requirement in order to use your $500 folio credit.  (You can use your folio credit for spa services, though.)

And, speaking of food, if you dine at Jack Binion's Steak -- which is outstanding -- the portions (in my opinion) are enormous and large enough to share.  My guest and I had dinner there on two occasions.  Both times we shared two appetizers and one entree (and, at one of the dinners, we "splurged" on a dessert to share).  By the way, the "Steak Flight" is a great way to sample three different entrees in smaller portions, along with their accompanying vegetables and starches.

Also, without a car, you may feel a bit isolated.  Rental cars are not available at the Horseshoe, so be sure to rent at the airport if you think you'll want a car.

■ A great server at Jack Binion's Steak is Luiz†.  Ask if he's working.

■ If you use cream, milk or half-and-half in your coffee, with the exception of Jack Binion's Steak (I think!), you'll have to settle for individual servings of a non-dairy creamer (Coffee-mate®).

■ Check with the cashier for current policies regarding check-cashing and eChecks.

■ There is a stiff 10 percent tax on food and beverage which comes out of your folio credit, so, essentially, you've really got only about $450 to spend. If you're into spa treatments, you're better off using your credit at the spa, and use Quick Rewards at the dining outlets. Using Quick Rewards forgives the sales tax.
